HISTORY
ABOUT US…
In post-war Marlborough, the bond between Armed Services and police teams ignited basketball's flame. Organized matches found a home in the Army Hall on Charles St, Blenheim, by March 1950, debuting on April 12th, 1950. By 1958, the game migrated to RNZAF Station in Woodbourne.
Plans for Centennial Hall emerged in 1957, realized in August 1966, elevating Marlborough's basketball status. Grassroots basketball thrived in 1974 with "mini-Balls," paving the way for Junior Leagues in 1980 under Ivan Wratt and Pat Rainbird. Demand outgrew Centennial Hall, leading to Stadium 2000.
MBA relocated to RNZAF Woodbourne during the transition, while Stadium 2000 replaced Centennial Hall adjacent to the aquatic center. The stadium opened on October 28th, dazzling spectators with an invitational match between the Nelson Giants and Kaikoura Whale Riders.
With three courts, MBA flourished, boasting 1200 registered players and hosting six adult leagues annually. Junior competitions welcomed children from Year 3 onwards, nurturing future champions.
As the sun set on Stadium 2000, Marlborough's basketball legacy shone brightly, a testament to the community's unwavering passion for the game.
